My Husband is Odd.

Whenever I adjust the volume on the stereo in Min Gi's car, he often will change it by one number. This behavior confused me (because a one-number change either way usually has little impact on the quality of the sound), but I kind of shrugged it off. He also insisted that our wedding ceremony be 29 or 31 minutes, not 30. I thought he was a little strange, but last night I found out what the big deal is.

I kissed him on the cheek. Two times.

"You have to do one more!"

"What?"

"You have to kiss one more time. One time or three times only. Not two."

"Why?"

"Some people are more comfortable with even numbers. I am more comfortable with odd numbers." He says this matter of factly, like it is the most common thing in the world.

"So you won't accept two kisses? Or four? Or one hundred?"

"One hundred plus one."

Min Gi has no other OCD tendencies, so this "comfort" with odd numbers strikes me as... well... odd.

  2. I read that 4 is an unlucky number in Korean (as is 40, 400, etc.) and if you give money for weddings you have to give 300 or 500, not 400. Min Gi's feelings seem consistent with this. On the other hand, adjusting the volume in the car could just be a male control thing.

    Love,

Mom (Dad of course disagrees with me on the male control thing, which just proves it is correct!)

  3. No big deal - just keep the numbers odd :) That hopefully isn't as annoying as, say, leaving the toilet seat up, or turning the light on while you're still sleeping...

  4. so cute! my husband cleans his ears with his socks.... i can't remember if I ever thought that was cute. And he liked it a lot when were were first married and I didn't know any korean at all, I used to make up korean words (and remember and use them - ha ha!)

i heard that female is "even" and therefore unlucky. When they order soju at company dinners, they order 3 at a time. One is not enough and two is a girl number, so skip that. ha ha ha!

i am also married to a korean guy. don't read my blog while you are in wedded bliss, but if you are curious about the dark side, see theginkotree.blogspot.com

best of luck to you newlyweds ^^
